Over the course of the weekend (5/6th May) a club survey will be launched to get player and member views on a proposal to focus our league cricket on Saturdays in The Everards Leicestershire League. The club had agreed in 2010 through the then committee structure that an application be made to join the league - and now an approach from the league has been made for the club to potentially join in 2014 or even as early as 2013.
The club have been shortlisted to join in 2013 and have to respond to the Everards League by 1st June whether we want our application to be brought forward - the league will then make a decision at their June Committee meeting and advise if we have been successful. This earlier entry is what we are wanting to gather views on from players before we make a recommendation to the Operating Committee.
A dedicated page on the website gives a bit more background information and will also contain the link for the survey very soon. In addition there will be a forum for you to add comments and questions which all can see.
The 2nd XI finally got a game underway in 2012 with a solid victory over Langtons CC. The 4 wicket win was set up by some excellent fielding including a great catch by Will Cropper and 2 catch debut by George Morley with the gloves. The stand out bowling performance came from Jack 'Godders' Godfrey who turned in 10 overs, 0 maidens, 5 for 34 runs.
Spin also proved king at Market Overton who went to press this week with fielding a far stronger side for the local derby. The wheels came off as the 1st XI surprisingly were asked to field and promptly restricted Marko to just 80 runs and at one point the tally looked like it might not make 50.
Some excellent bowling and fielding with standout performances from again from Alex Ashwin 7-0-7-2 wickets and Ben Collins 12-6-23-6 wickets.
Mark Cox then dominated with the bat scoring 48 chasing down the Marko score of 80. The winning runs were scored by Harry Butchart with an exquisite back foot shot through the covers.
The Sunday Friendly XI recorded a comfortable win over Belton in Rutland.
Next weekend 1st XI at home to March Town, 2nds away to Ramsey CC and the 3rds at home to Benefield.
Just to bring you up to speed on a decision reached on Thursday evening after a short meeting about the Saturday Friendly team.
Over the last 2 years it has become increasingly difficult to get a team together for the Saturday Friendly XI - we have managed to keep it going in the main due to the efforts of Steve Wade and Rob Roberts, but is getting even harder. We have added the 3rd XI on Sunday and also the NCL team which have been greatly needed, but invariably at the expense of getting a strong enough pool of players for Steve and Rob.
The decision has been made therefore, to remove all the fixtures for 2012 and make available the players who would normally play with Steve and Rob to either the NCL team or the Sunday Friendly XI with Dave Thorpe. The website will be updated to reflect this and Gary Marsh is being asked to make contact with the fixtures scheduled.
I hope you'll all understand and support this decision. We should also thank Steve Wade and Rob Roberts for the excellent work they have done running this team. Invariably Sally Wade also has done the teas each Saturday and as most games were at home that was a huge commitment - many thanks to all concerned.
